Dear Mum – I fear there’s nothing very new and nothing very exciting to write about in this month’s big effort. I have had two letters this month, both from England, and that has been the principal source of excitement. The parcel you mention having sent in October should be here soon now. Please don’t bother too much about sending things out, as I really think I am quite well outfitted now for the duration with my first parcel from England and this other one in prospect. Mrs Bassett in England, from whom came one of this month’s letters, says she is sending more books, which is very kind of her, so my intellectual needs are being catered for. We are well out of our hibernation here now, and soon when summer comes I anticipate a first-class tan. The soil round here is so light and sandy that it is almost like a beach, so sun-bathing is quite the appropriate thing. Well, I’m looking forward to some letters in the not-too-far-distant future, and till then much love from Arnold G.
